First of all I want to say that I'm Russian and sorry if I confuse something with the translation.

I think McCandless was a clever man and understood everyting you've said about struggling with nature and need of civilization for people need of shelter, food, agriculture and other.
But he was so tired and angry because of lie, violence, self-orientaited people that surrounded him that he sought for truth, for another life.
I don't know if you noticed or not but he desided to come back home not because of lack of food or anything but only because of people that he had left on his way: original family, new family, girlfriend, friends (that workers on the farm) He remembered them all and decided to return.
He's really good man that changes with the time, thinks a lot about himself, his life, his soul, and make decisions.
